Why did our breeding Chichlids eat their fry?

Our Chichlids had fry much to our surprise. They are mouth brooders as we noticed them "eating" them and spitting them out. After about 3-4 days everyone had vanished. There were no other fish in the tank at the time. Today we noticed more eggs. Should we take the parents out altogether?
