Breeding Barbs
How do you breed barbs?
It is
possible to give general breeding advice about barbs even if every barbs have
their own unique requirements since these requirements is somewhat similar.
You should setup an aquarium decorated with plants and a raster of some kind on
the bottom of the aquarium that prevents the fish to eat their own eggs. A
raster can be created by covering the bottom with glass marbles. Make sure that
the water conditions are suitable for the species you are trying to breed.
Put a pair or for some species two males and a female in the aquarium. Make
sure that the fish is in breeding condition before trying to breed them. It is beneficial
if the aquarium is struck by sunlight and ideally the morning light as this
trigger spawning in many species. The fish usually spawn in a couple of days. Keep
an eye on the aquarium and remove the parents once the spawning is complete to
minimize the chance that they succeed in eating their own eggs and fry.
